The Department was established in 1978, headed by Prof. Dr Vukota Okiljević  with its initial task to make researches in the field of agricultural and hydro melioration. Back in that time, the most important tasks were large investment projects of melioration within Posavina (Lijevče Field, Nožičko, Dubička plateau...), and later on in eighties there were projects of hydro and agricultural melioration of karats fields (moss soils of Grahovo, Livno, and Glamoč). In addition to these activities, there were some parallel activities of systematic soil fertility control, primarily within large state owned farms.

In the pre war period, during the war and post war, in new specific environment, headed by Prof. Dr Petar Durman, main activity of the Department was directed toward finding solutions for many problems in the field of agricultural chemistry and plant nutrition within small size plots. Today, the Department has a modern laboratory (200 m + 150 m2), modern field and laboratory equipment for soil, plant and water testing with the purpose of proper nutrition of agricultural crops as well as protection of the environment.
